We originally intended to have a guest spoken word poet on this track but he ghosted us so HERE I AM writing long spoken word sections for my own songs again. I am very happy with how this turned out, though.
Vacant Chair is a suicide awareness / prevention song. It’s written about someone struggling with their family relationships and relationships in general. Someone so depressed that even the act of going to school every day seems insurmountable. It’s so easily for the walls to close in and for you to feel hopeless.
This song is an open letter to those considering suicide, begging them to stop and reconsider. It talks about the family’s feelings towards losing someone and how it will affect/change them. It brings up the reasons to stay. Death comes swiftly enough - the thought of anyone bringing it upon themselves is heartbreaking to me. All of us have been affected by losing those close to us.
In this specific case, the person contemplating suicide lives. One less person is lost - one less chair is vacant.
If you are going through something like the subject of this song, please reach out to us, your friends, your family, and suicide hotline - anyone that can help you.
I will let the words in this song do the rest of the explaining for me, as they are very straightforward.
Stick around. Stay alive.
